The NGO - Thembalethu
Nestled in the isolated South African Nkomazi Region where the HIV rate has reached an alarming 50%, Thembalethu Home Based Care is an organization which aims to offer a haven of hope and love to all who are affected by HIV/AIDS in the communities in which it operates. Thembalethu's mission is to develop an integrated support structure for families affected and infected with HIV/AIDS so that each member can maintain a sense of dignity and worth and together contribute to the positive development of the community by fighting the impact of AIDS.
Thembalethu Home Based Care recently outfitted its facility with 30 computers and three satellites equipping the site with wireless Internet for the community to use. Looking to use the power of the Internet to help increase donations for food, blankets, clothing and shelter, Turn the Web Black hopes to offer Internet users information on the lives and work of a community of people in one of the most isolated and desolate corners of the world while also educating readers on energy efficient techniques for the World-Wide-Web.
One part of Thembalethu has been the establishment of the Youth in Action whose visions is that all the youth in the Nkomazi are to be motivated, fulfilled and successful citizens who pro-actively contribute to the community. With the Internet, Thembalethu's Youth In Action is hoping that is can pro-actively participate in a positive way with both their local community and the global community in efforts to teach the world about the bleak situation in the Nkomazi Region. Thembalethu is hoping that the Turn the Web Black initiative will encourage Internet users to begin to think more about global consequences throughout this technological revolution that we are living in.
